 for World Polio Day

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
October 24th is World Polio Day

I'm sending out this special full page bulletin because I believe the Fight to End Polio is in it's most important stage yet.  The following articles and events help tell the story of why Rotary Will Never Give Up the fight till the job is done.

We need all hands on deck to continue the fight till the job is done!   I am ASKing you to give to the cause in whatever way you see fit.

We found the video  "Reaching Every Last Child" from the Polio Global Eradication Initiative of which Rotary is a Global Partner.

Whether it’s Pennies for Polio, Pizza for Polio or Tailgating for Polio, we are in the red zone with the goal in sight.  We cannot stop now.  Register and promote your event on   If you have not planned one yet, visit www.endpolio.org for ideas.

In the August Rotary International Polio Newsletter Rotary announced nearly $100 million in grants to support the global effort to end polio, a vaccine-preventable disease that once paralyzed hundreds of thousands of children each year.

Here some other highlights:

The announcement comes as Nigeria marks two years without any reported cases of wild poliovirus, following four reported cases in 2016.

“The fact that no new cases of wild poliovirus have been detected in Nigeria points to the improved surveillance and rapid response protocols Rotary and its Global Polio Eradication Initiative partners have established, particularly in insecure and inaccessible areas,” said Michael K. McGovern, chair of Rotary’s International PolioPlus Committee. “While this progress is promising, it’s time to redouble our efforts so we can continue to maintain the political and financial support necessary to end polio for good.”

While significant strides have been made against the paralyzing disease, wild poliovirus is still a threat in parts of the world, with 10 cases in Afghanistan and three cases in Pakistan this year so far. As long as a single child has polio, all children are at risk, which underscores the need for ongoing funding and political commitment to eradication.

Rotary has committed to raising $50 million a year to be matched 2-to-1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, yielding $450 for polio eradication activities over a three-year period. Each club in our district is asked to contribute $1,500 for the next three years.

Many clubs in our District 6380 have an annual fundraiser. We as district co-chairs can help. One particular fundraiser is “Pizza For Polio.” All the information can be found on our district website. For more ideas you can also go to:

In addition, we would love to come to one of your club meetings and present a PowerPoint presentation on polio as your program that day. It will be a heartwarming story. Remember:  As Rotarians, we are the conscience of polio eradication in the world and must stay active until the end.

“We are this close.”

Ann Arbor Rotary Hits the Trifecta
The Rotary Club of Ann Arbor hit the Trifecta while organizing ways to commemorate World Polio Day this year.  Three exceptional events are planned for World Polio Day October 24, 2018.

SPEAKER: PDG Elizabeth “Liz” Smith Yeats is presenting a Polio Update at the club’s noon luncheon meeting on October 24 at Webers Inn in Ann Arbor, the club’s temporary home while the Michigan Union is under renovation.  Liz is known for challenging Rotarians to learn something new about polio that we didn’t know already know.

FRIEND RAISING: Community leaders from government, industry and business are receiving personal invitations to come as guests to the luncheon meeting.  Local governments are proclaiming World Polio Day in Washtenaw County and Ann Arbor.

PURPLE PINKIES:Purple Pinkie Projects are being planned by Interactors at Pioneer and Huron High Schools.  The purple pinkie project grew from actual field vaccination activities.  As Rotary volunteers went into communities and villages to administer vaccinations, children that had been given the vaccine had their pinkies dyed purple so that volunteers could easily identify children that had been given the vaccine.  The students’ idea for a fundraiser is that those contributing $1 would have their pinkie fingernails marked with polish or a marker to show their support for polio eradication.   RCAA club members will have a chance to participate in their own Purple Pinkie Project on World Polio Day.

Ann Arbor is a special place to celebrate World Polio Day because on April 12, 1955
it was announced at the Rackham Building on the University of Michigan campus that the Salk vaccine was “safe, effective and potent”.   Let’s finish this job!
