On Saturday, November 5, the three Rotary Clubs in Ann Arbor and Kids Coalition Against Hunger (KCAH) combined to conduct an area-wide service project. The effort was to assemble packets of ingredients to make hot, nutritious, and filling "one-pot" meals. Each meal is comprised of rice, soy, dried vegetables, vitamins, and flavoring. Our original goals were 30,000 meals packed by 150 volunteers in 90 minutes, supported by $10,500 in donations. After some promotional efforts, boosted by an MLive newspaper article and an appearance on WDIV, about 200 volunteers assembled a total of 32,000 meals in 100 minutes! The effort was supported by a total of $10,782 from 59 generous donors. Boxes with packets for over 6,000 of those meals have already been distributed to food pantries in Ann Arbor, Saline, Milan, and Ypsilanti to help address food insecurity in our area. The rest went back to KCAH for sharing nationally and internationally. The most recent destinations are in Florida, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Guatemala, and Ghana. Truly appreciated was the participation of civic-minded persons from the public, several nearby Rotary Clubs, U-M Rotaractors, high school Interactors, National Honor Society members, local Scouting troops, and Ann Arbor Kiwanis.
